1 Month 14 days: I didn’t fall off the planet!

7 Apr

I’m BACK! Wow, do I feel guilty for not updating everyone! I’ve had two doctor’s appointments since my last post. The big difference here is I CAN WALK AGAIN!!!! Now, would you be blogging, or out walking! Heck yeah! Okay, so I’m a little excited but it wasn’t that easy getting here. And I’m not fully healed yet obviously.

My doc appointment on March 22 was when I got taken off the crutches. He put me in regular tennis shoes. It was horrible to walk at first. I was mainly walking on the outside of my foot. Oh yeah, here’s my foot from that day.

Just to show you how the swelling was that day…

Just to show you how the swelling was that day!

What he sent me home from his office... 2 band-aids!

I was in complete shock that he sent me home with two band-aids!!! The swelling is getting better every day, but I generally come home to sausage toes in the evening. Walking got easier and easier as the cut was healing… however most of my walking was on the outer edge of my foot. I was extremely worried that I was going to injure my foot in another way, but thankfully now, I’m past that stage.

I had another doctor appointment on April 5, 2011. Dr. C told me I was a slow healer. I wasn’t shocked. There was a lot of dead skin around the incision (which you may see in the picture below…) All that puffy stuff – yep, dead skin. Gross isn’t it? It does feel better now that he cut it off, but I went in to that Dr. appointment not wanting him to touch it! Guess what the first thing he did was. You got it, cut all the skin off. It does feel better now though. Thanks Dr. C. It actually looks better without it anyways, plus you can see the two spots that aren’t completely healed up too.

Well either I’m doing something wrong on this site is acting funny – maybe it doesn’t like all my pictures. So I will just have the rest of my text here, and you guys will have to sort through the images!

There is a picture of my foot at the bottom. Doesn’t it look much better? We’re on on the downhill slope team. Yes! I’ll leave you with the words of Charlie Sheen “Wow. What does that mean? I’m bi-WINNING.”

I will finish this soon… tired of fidgeting with the computer!

4/4/11 You can see the dead skin around the cut

P.S. I think I am going to make a progression page to show the pictures as it heals. You know, Like a flip book, but not.

How is the healing going? I have a fractured(or bipartite..they aren’t sure) sesamoid on my left foot. It is the tibial one…nearest the inside of my foot.Is that the same one you had removed? It is the one further away from my other toes. I injured it in Jan 2010 and am still having problems with it. My doctor said surgery would be the next step but I’m unsure about it. I’ve read horror stories about it online from different people that have had it. Just curious as to how you are doing today. By the way,I live in Baton Rouge so we aren’t very far apart! My sister lives in Houston.I also fell and had a grade 2-3 ankle sprain prior to this injury!!! UGGG!

Wow Elise- you sound just like me! I had the medial sesamoid bone removed so closer to the pinky toe :). I had read horror stories online about the surgery as well and I want to tell you that I am SO GLAD I did it. I saw your comment come through my email and realized I haven’t updated anyone on how I’m doing.. which is really good. I’ll go update a post now. And you’re from Louisiana – not too far away at all, we drive through there often! I’ll go post an update, and if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask!

Hi Kim- I still haven’t had surgery but think I will have to in the near future. How are you doing? Can you walk a good distance now? Do you mind telling me which doctor did your surgery and where? Sorry for all the questions. I’m just trying to gather lots of information before I have surgery. Thanks so much for your time!! I hope you are continuing to do well. Elise

I had the inside one taken out. I was born with an extra set-bipartite sesamoid. It was sitting on a nerve! Had the surgery Dec 12 and today is dec 21. So, this blog really helps me know what to expect. Yes, its worth it!! I had a bunionectomy on my righy foot 3 years ago at which time they took out the tibial (closest to the bunion). My foot never felt better and i even got back into heels. I am 53 so that was exciting. But because i am a teacher, the left foot didnt aurvive hence here we are.

I am getting surgery in a little over a month, same as you but in my right foot. I’ve been dealing with it since 2009 so 7 years!! It’s awful. Finally decided to go with surgery since literally nothing else helped. Reading your blog made me feel so much better about the surgery, thank you for being honest and detailed!
